Why JASO MA2 is the only oil rating that matters

In most motorcycles the same oil lubricates the engine, the gearbox and the clutch. That is a harder job than a car oil is asked to do, and it is why the JASO rating exists.
The mechanism
Modern car oils carry friction modifiers to reduce parasitic loss and improve economy. A wet clutch works by friction. Put a modified oil into a shared sump and the clutch plates slip under load — usually first noticed as revs rising in top gear without matching acceleration.
Reading the ratings
- JASO MA / MA2. Friction retention suitable for a wet clutch. MA2 is the higher friction specification and the safe default for most modern bikes.
- JASO MB. Lower friction, for scooters and anything with a dry or automatic clutch. Wrong for a conventional wet clutch.
The viscosity on the filler cap is only half the answer. Match the JASO rating first, then the grade — and ignore an energy-conserving marking entirely, because that is precisely the additive package causing the trouble.
